For the second installment of the Top 5 International we have Don Brown, head of one of the best skateboard brands of all time, éS.
Creative, fun, generous, Don is part of the history of skateboarding, not only created one of the best teams in history, but it helped to design much of the skate shoes, which over the years became Classics.

Para la segunda entrega del Top 5 Internacional lo tenemos a Don Brown, cabeza de una de las mejores marcas de zapatillas de skate de todos los tiempos, éS.
Creativo, divertido, generoso, Don es parte de la historia del skate, no solo formó uno de los mejores teams de la historia, sino que ayudó a diseñar gran parte de las zapatillas de skate, que a través de los años se convirtieron en Clásicos.

1. When did you start skateboarding? and why? ¿Cuando empezaste a andar en skate? y ¿porqué?
I started skateboarding in 1976 in Brighton, England. My brother found a “Surf Flyer” skateboard and I took it over.
Then when the wheels fell of I stole my sisters skateboard “Coyote GT” Skateboard. And from there I pretty much borrowed as many skateboards as I could. I eventually bought a board in 1981 Caballero, Six Trac trucks and Bones Mini Cubics… so much fun.
Then I borrowed my friends freestyle board as there wasn’t much to skate in the UK… and it rains a lot out there, it made sense to do flatland tricks while waiting for it to dry up.
My 2 friends and I planned a trip to the USA. We got a 1 way ticket with a 5 day bus pass… I had $300 in my pocket and no idea what I was really doing or how I could ever survive with not enough money to get a plane ticket home.
We got picked up at the Dallas, Texas bus station by Jeff Phillips…that’s how small skating was back then.
We stayed in Texas for a few weeks and Jeff Phillips got me sponsored for freestyle by Sims skateboards. Sims was based in California so we headed that way. We slept on beaches and at the Del Mar Skate Ranch in San Diego. I eventually got down to $1 and luckily got a job at Sims/Vision on their warehouse.
I entered a few Amateur contests and got top 5 … then I won 3 contests and they wanted to turn me pro for Vision Skateboards in 1986. First Pro contest was Oceanside where I got 4th place…
I used to skate a lot with Pierre Andre who also rode for Sims/Vision so we were good friends – lived in Huntington Beach California, and travelled the world for contest, demos, and store signings.
I did well in contests but it was 1989 the I won the World Champions in Munster, Germany. This was at the peak of skateboarding in the 80’s… by 1990 skateboarding started to drop in popularity and the big companies at the time – Vision, Powell, Santa Cruz, Thrasher, TWS all started to go downhill fast.
Steve Rocco a fellow Freestyler, started to take skateboarding in in his hands and built new skater owned brands such as World Industries, Plan B, 101, Big Brother magazine, Ghetto Wear…
Then this triggered more brands like Foundation, New Deal, 411, Real Skateboards, Stereo, Shut skates…and the whole skate industry became skater owned. Pierre Andre took over the French brand etnies in 1990 which was perfectly aligned with the skater owned movement that was happening.
In 1991 I saw him at the beach and he said he needed some help so as a friend I helped him out. It’s been 26 years now and we’ve launched éS, Sheep, Emerica, ThirtyTwo, Altamont…Pierre’s an amazing person that has so much passion and commitment to skateboarding, his brands, and the Sole Technology Family.
Empecé a patinar en 1976 en Brighton, Inglaterra. Mi hermano encontró un skate “Surf Flyer” y lo agarre.
Luego cuando las ruedas cayeron, le robe el skate “Coyote GT” a mi hermana. Desde ese momento comencé a pedir prestados tantos skates como pude. Eventualmente me compre una tabla en 1981, era una Caballero, Six Trac trucks y Bones Minicubics, tan divertido.
Luego pedí a mis amigos freestylers, prestadas sus tablas, no había muchas en UK. Llueve mucho en esa zona, tenía sentido hacer trucos de flat, mientras uno esperaba que se secara.
Mis dos amigos y yo, planeamos una viaje a Estados Unidos. Teníamos un ticket de ida con un pase para el colectivo por 5 días. 300 dolares en mi bolsillo y cero idea de que estaba haciendo ni cómo iba a sobrevivir, ya que no tenía suficiente plata para el pasaje de vuelta.
Nos pasó a buscar Jeff Phillips por la estación de colectivos de Dallas, Texas. Así de chico era el skate en esa época.
Nos quedamos unas semanas y Jeff me consiguió un sponsor como freestyler con Sims Skateboards. Sims era de California, así que ese fue nuestro destino. Dormíamos en la playa y en el Skate Del Mar Ranch en San Diego. Por suerte consegui $1, y un trabajo en Sims/Vision, en los depósitos.
Entre en algunos campeonatos Amateurs y estuve entre los mejores 5, luego gane 3 campeonatos y ellos decidieron convertirme en Pro para Vision Skateboards en 1986. El primer campeonato Pro en el que participé, fue en Oceanside, obtuve el 4ª puesto.
Solía patinar mucho con Pierre André, que también corría para Sims/Vision, y fue ahí que nos convertimos en grandes amigos. Vivíamos en Huntington Beach, California y viajamos por todo el mundo para ir a Campeonatos, Demos o firmas en skateshops.
Me iba bien en los campeonatos, pero fue en 1989 que pude ganar el Campeonato Mundial, en Munster, Alemania. Era lo mejor del skate en los 80s, pero en 1990 la popularidad del skate comenzó a caer, y con ella las grandes marcas como, Vision, Powell, Santa Cruz, Thrasher, TWS.
Steve Rocco, un compañero Freestyler, comenzó a tomar al skate en sus manos, creando nuevas marcas en manos de skaters, como World Industries, Plan B, 101, Big Brother magazine, Ghetto Wear…..
Esto desencadenó en nuevas marcas como Foundation, New Deal, 411, Real Skateboards, Stereo, Shut skates… y todo la industria del skate comenzó a tener dueños skaters. Pierre André se hizo cargo de Etnies una marca francesa en 1990, esto estaba alineado de forma perfecta con esta nueva tendencia de dueños skaters, así fue como el movimiento surgió.
En 1991 lo vi en la playa y me dijo que necesitaba ayuda, y como éramos amigos lo ayude. Ya han pasado 26 años, hemos lanzado éS, Sheep, Emerica, ThirtyTwo, Altamont… Pierre es una persona increíble, que tiene tanta pasión y compromiso por el skate, sus marcas y por toda la familia de Sole Technology.

4. A characteristic that a shoe should have for you to choose. Característica que sí o sí debe tener una zapa para que la elijas
I like a shoe that has a good last (Shape) something that flows, is simple yet functional. Right now I’m wearing the éS SENSE as is so comfortable!.
Me gustan las zapatillas que tienen buena forma, que fluya, es simple pero funcional. Ahora estoy usando las éS Sense, son tan cómodas!!!.
5. What is your favorite era of skate shoes? ¿Cuál es tu época de zapas preferidas?
I Loved the early Vans era in the 70’s…but Vans got into skateboarding as an accident… they used to make tennis shoes and all kinds of different shoes… it was Tony Alva that started to wear them as choices were limited at the time. As he wore them more skateboarders started to wear them and it went from there. etnies is the first skater owned footwear brand in the world and has been that way since 1986. My favourite period for skate shoes was 1993-96 … etnies, éS and Sheep were creating so many great designs we were unstoppable!
Amo la primera época de Vans, en los 70s, pero Vans entró al skateboarding por accidente, ellos hacían zapatillas de tenis y un montón de estilos diferentes. Fue Tony Alva quien comenzó a usarlos, así que skaters al verlo comenzaron a usarlos también.
Etnies fue la primera empresa de zapatillas de skate en el mundo, creada por un skater (Pierre André), eso fue en 1986.
Mi época favorita es desde 1993 hasta 1996, Etnies, éS y Sheep lanzaron muchos grandes diseños que eran imparables!!!
6. Were there any skate shoes you loved and never could have? ¿Hubo algunas zapas que amabas y nunca la pudiste tener?
I always could grab shoes when I needed them. The early éS Koston 1’s that I designed were hard to get all colours as they sold so fast! The Ed Templeton Sheep shoes went fast too!.
Siempre pude tener las zapatillas que quería. Las primeras éS Koston 1, que diseñe, eran difíciles de obtener en todos los colores, se agotaron muy rápido.
Los pro models de Ed Templeton en Sheep, también se agotaban enseguida..

Thanks to skateboarding and every skateboarder around the world for making the world go around! Thanks to Pierre and all the Sole Technology employees the have helped us be who we are, and thanks to everyone who has ever worn etnies, Emerica, éS, Sheep, Altamont you guys RULE… we truly appreciate all the support and inspiration you give us everyday. Oh… and, thanks to everyone I’ve ever borrowed a skateboard from… I think I’ve only bought 3 skateboards in 41 years thanks to all the amazing brands and friends that have supported my addictive habit…hahahaha!
